Hex City

environmental zoning

Urban zoning is an essential element in the design on the city. It's a legacy built on the importance of the community and preservation of nature in a climate of sustainability. Hex City's environmental zoning distinguishes this design from all other cities in the world by returning over 50% of the city to nature.

The configuration here presented is the result of the following philosophies

1 The importance and preservation of the natural environment, providing us with clean air, renewable resources and recreational spaces.

2 The decentralization of the City as a measure to counter act traffic congestion, pollution and energy consumption. +

3 The decentralization of the City as a measure to counter act the concentration of power and contrasting demographics and to improve the fair and equal access to services. +

4 The identity and involvement of a community as a unique space and in relation to its neighbors, with regards to self governance, cultural segregation, interdependence and the spread of wealth. +

flexible zoning

In order to accommodate the needs of the city, HexCity takes a flexible approach to zoning. Residential areas can accommodate industrial or commercial ventures near the nodes. Family business are encouraged to prosper in residential zones instead of commercial zones.

residential zones

The residential zone occupies the strip of land between two hexagons. A series of small roads connect each zone to the main road network.

A narrow park runs down the length of the strip connecting the nodes at each end. These parks provide allotment space for people interested in growing their own produce. Subsurface trains can operate from the center of the park to reduce car dependency for the local residents and provide pedestrian traffic, via the park, to two nodes.

As with all zones, the name of the residential zone is taken from the names of the woods they reside between.

Residential zones can accommodate small private businesses that operate from the owner's residential property.

community and commerce zones

The community and commerce zone occupies the central part of the connecting nodes between three hexagons. These zones connect and serve three residential zones. They host all public buildings, schools, offices, shops and central public open spaces.

industrial and services zones

The industrial and services zone occupies the small corners of the nodes. They are situated between all four zones. This zone is conveniently located to provide exclusive access to the main road system. Emergency services (fire, police, hospitals), transport depots, parking towers, distribution companies and large companies with many employees also qualify to this locate within this zone.

woodland and recreational zones

The woodland and recreational zone occupies all of the land delimited by the road that surrounds the hexagon. The zone can be home to lakes, forests, mountains, parks or fields. This distribution allows over 50% of the city to be designated as woodland and recreational land. Pedestrian, cyclists, skateboarders, other non-combustion modes of transport, and the emergency services, are allowed in the zone.

Their names become the official name of the hexagon. See connected community for more information on denomination.

These zones can be used for flood control in some cases.
